Sports Recap Aug 23 – 29

Last week, Eagle athletes competed in early season match-ups that resulted in one win, four losses, and several individuals placing in their events.

On Aug 27, the football team lost their home non-conference game against Kaufman by a score of 39-36.

Quarterback Sam Peterson passed a total of 296 yards leading to two touchdowns with an average of 13.5 yards per pass. Receiver Jacob Seekford caught seven passes and ran a total of 135 yards with an average of 19.3 yards per catch.

“The boys are playing hard,” coach Justin Mason said. “We are still learning, growing, and adapting in areas but we are really coming together as a solid unit on both sides of the ball. We have great coaches teaching these kids. We have great kids that are excited to be back on the field, and we are continuing to get better day after day.”

On Aug 28, the cross country team competed in Kaufman. There was no distinction between JV and Varsity races, so all competitors got to race together.

On the girls side, Gaby Saboia finished 2nd overall and Laicha Zuniga 8th. Whitleigh Hayes finished 12th, Maddie Villareal 14th, and Bre Biggar 16th.

On the boys side, Colby Wood placed 10th, Alex Gutierrez 12th, Ty Pontius 15th, Carson Navarro 17th, and Davis Carnathan 19th.

“Our coaching staff is very excited about the prospects for this season,” coach Christopher Grotemat said. “The number of girls participating is, by far, the largest we have had in my five seasons as head coach. There is definitely a ‘strength in numbers’ approach on the boys side, with a number of returning varsity runners from last season.”

The varsity volleyball team took the court Aug 24 night against Gilmer at home winning in five sets 20-25, 25-15, 25-16, 23-25, and 15-10. Senior Libero, Alondra Romero, led the defense with 21 digs, and added 3 aces. Senior Middle Blocker, Brenley Philen, led the attack with 12 kills and 7 digs. McKinleigh Evans and Maddox Lay each added 7 kills. Ellie Watkins put down 5 kills, and added 8 digs, and an ace. Preslie Walters added 9 defensive digs on the night. Tatum Woodard had 16 assists and Anna Ivy added 14 assists from the setter position, and an ace.

Junior varsity lost in three sets 17-25, 25-22, and 17-25. Megan McGee had 6 aces and played solid defense from the Libero position. Joey Forsythe led the attack with 4 kills, and Whitney Dao led the defense with 3 blocks.

Freshmen A Team lost to Gilmer 19-25 and 19-25. Kortlen Pierce had 6 kills to lead the attack and 2 aces. Merrick Gary had 4 kills, 1 ace, and 6 assists. Trinadee Jackson added 5 assists on the night. Callie Schmidt had 3 digs and 2 aces. Aubrey Travis also added 2 aces. Libero, Reagan Hope recorded 4 digs.

Freshmen B Team also lost to Gilmer by the same scores of 19-25, and 19-25. Taelor Schilling led with 3 aces, and 2 kills. Haley Crockett had 3 kills. Libero, Holli Dunn added 4 digs. Setter Clara Helvey added 7 assists for the Lady Eagles.
