Students Medal at State UIL Competition

Senior Bailey Spencer and sophomore Zachary Jones medaled at the state UIL academics competition in Austin. Spencer won first place in feature writing and Jones placed third in computer applications.

“Lindale has a legacy of excellence,” journalism sponsor Neda Morrow said. “For over a decade, our UIL teams has consistently placed in the tops at state competition in a variety of events. From computer applications to speech to journalism and more, Lindale believes in excelling in academics.”

Spencer was awarded the state champion in the 5A division. She also received tops in Texas awards, meaning she is the overall highest feature writer in all 6 classifications.

The anticipation building up to the awards ceremony overwhelmed me,” Spencer said. “It was a shock, and when she announced that I also placed tops in the state of Texas, that surprise overtook me. It almost bewilders me to think that I was able to achieve that title. It gives me hope that someday my writing, whether it be in poetry or novels, I will be known in the literature world.”

Jones prepared for months to compete at the state competition. The event entails doing a combination of Microsoft Word, Excel and Access applications in a short time period of 30 minutes.

“I was very proud of him,” computer applications sponsor Amanda English said.  “He really accomplished a lot this year, and I look forward to seeing him compete in the future.”

Both students competed in several competitions leading to qualifying for state. The competition was held in Austin, Texas.

“It felt pretty incredible to medal,” Jones said. “Especially after being so close last year, it felt amazing to finally have that culmination or everything I’ve worked towards.”
