The Eagle golf team placed first at the district tournament recently, with the Lady Eagle golfers coming in 2nd in district. Sophomore Evan White placed first as an individual and senior Bethany Simmons placed second. The boys team has advanced to regionals which will take place in Rockwall on April 11 and 12.
“Our boys golf team has had an excellent season so far,” golf coach Ben Shipley said. “We won some tournaments this year, but we saved our best for the district tournament. Our guys turned in their best performance of the year at district, winning by over 20 strokes.”
Members of both teams but in the hours of practice to improve. Both Evan White and Bethany Simmons worked hard to improve their game in order to reach the top spots in district.
“Evan White was the individual district champion,” Shipley said. “He performed at his best in the biggest tournament so far this year. Evan has worked hard on his game for the past few years, so winning district was very rewarding, I’m sure.”
Simmons is going to play college golf at Hardin Simmons University. This season she accomplished taking 8-10 strokes off of her last year’s scores. She is on the course everyday from when she gets out of school until it gets dark outside.
“Bethany Simmons, our #1 player, led the team all season in low scores, even though she didn’t have her “A” game all season,” girls golf coach Romy Smith said. “She is a team leader on and off the course. I am very excited to see what she does in the future.”
