Seniors Taegan Terry and Zaniya Mumphrey were named as April’s athletes of the month on Monday. The award is sponsored by Chik-Fil-A.
“Coach Cochran and I thought athlete of the month would be a nice way to recognize athletes from all sports throughout the year, and Chick-Fil-A was kind enough to sponsor them each month,” girls athletic director Jessica Camp said. ” Our decision is not only determined by athletic success but also leadership qualities, work ethic, attitude and other characteristics their coach highlights.”
At the state meet Zaniyah hit a personal record (PR) of 430 lbs and a total weight of 1015 lbs. She placed 5th at the state event.
“Zaniya Mumphrey is a two time state qualifier in powerlifting and is a good thrower for our track team as well,” Coach Jacob Alford said. “Zaniya has worked very hard to accomplish her goal of becoming a two time state medalist.”
Terry has participated in tennis all four years of high school and recently placed first in mixed doubles with his partner, junior Bailee Lane, at district. Along with tennis, Terry also participates in basketball.
“Taegan Terry is an outstanding athlete who has a great work ethic and is a leader on and off the court,” Coach Randal Namanny said. “He has been on a court all year from August 1 to present whether on a basketball court or tennis court. This young man does not stop. He is a player with grit and he loves the grind.”
