The other team has the ball. 24-23 reads on the scoreboard. The whistle blows and the serve comes. Libero and senior Alondra Romero digs the ball as it almost slams to the floor. The ball spins toward the setter’s hand. “COVER,” she yells. “Send it to me!” senior Brenley Philen yells. The setter sends it to Philen and she jumps. Her eyes reach over the net as they connect to the ball. Her hand slams the ball down to the ground. The whistle blows indicating their point, 24-24.
Alondra Romero and Brenley Philen play on the varsity volleyball team. The team’s season ended 7-4 for district. The Lady Eagles then beat Pleasant Grove in Bi-District and later fell to Sunnyvale in Area.
“We worked on a lot of teamwork and being one as a team,” head coach Jessica Camp said. “I am so excited to see how far we go and am beyond proud of how far we have come already. They are playing together well and have a ton of fun doing it.”
Romero plays the libero position, who specializes in defence, and is number zero. Philen plays middle blocker, and is number 12.
“I know I have to be a good role model to the younger girls on the team and I am taking that job seriously this year,” Romero said. “I care about every single player on my team and I hope I am making them proud.”
They both started playing volleyball on a team in seventh grade during Junior High. Ever since then, they have been playing together up until high school.
“The most exciting part of volleyball to me is right before the game,” Philen said. There is lots of tension between both teams as we’re getting ready to win. The competitiveness makes things exciting, especially when we are playing against one of our rival schools.”
Philen plans on going to college and then joining the volleyball team. Other than volleyball, Philen also participates in the National Honors Society (NHS), and also plays on the varsity basketball team.
“In my free time I mostly play volleyball,” Philen said. “But, I also love hanging out with my friends and family as well as going to church.”
Romero also plans on going to college and then joining the volleyball team. Other than volleyball, Romero also playing on the softball team.
“I love hanging out with my friends and hanging out with my family,” Romero said. “I also enjoy school and going to church.”
