Senior Simon Young has been nominated for Junior Artist of the Year for the 2018 ETX Music Awards. Final voting will end July 15th, and the nominated musicians, songwriters, and radio stations will receive their final votes in the ceremony.
“[Winning an ETX award] would be a huge opportunity for me. It is very surreal, and something I never really expected would come so soon,” Young said. “To be up for this award is just phenomenal to me.”
Young was nominated by his band Chaos and Creation’s lead guitar player, Randy Stevens, his girlfriend Kaylee Rodriquez, and two other anonymous voters. The four nominations were enough to put Simon into the polls as a contender for junior artist of the year.
“I did not really think anything of it [when Randy and Kaylee] nominated me,” Young said. “Then apparently there were two more [people who nominated me, and] I did not even know who they were. After that I was like ‘I have a shot of doing this.’”
Young also participates in a music outreach program hosted by Truman W. Smith’s Children’s Care Center in Gladewater. He plays music for debilitated children and teens in the center.
“Simon has played for us twice, when we had an artist that was not able to come and Simon stepped up,” Vanessa Mcgraw, activities director at Truman Smith’s Children’s Care Center said. “He’s really special and one of our favorites out of all the artists.”
The ETX music awards will take place in September of 2018, where the nominees with the highest votes will receive their awards. There are over 30 different categories for artists to receive awards, and 5 nominees per category.
“[Simon] has an amazing voice and cosmic stage presence,” Stevens said. “It is such an honor to call him my bandmate. He takes music seriously. His passion for music is contagious. He is more confident in himself. He is growing into a pro.”
