Debaters lunch with the court

Emma Johnsen, Logan Jones and Kylan Kuslak went to hear oral arguments presented by the Texas State Supreme Court at the University of Texas at Tyler February 26.

Members of the court go around the state two times a year to various locations so the people of Texas get to see what an oral argument looks like in the chambers of the Supreme Court.  The last time they were in the Tyler area was 2002. They presented actual cases that they will write decisions on in the next couple of months. They were the oral arguments by the lawyers for each side.

“It was extremely informative about the Texas judicial system and the way the Supreme Court works,” debate coach Janice Caldwell said.

Students were able to have a Q/A with Professor Garner of SMU who helped author “Black’s Law Dictionary.”  Students were informed about the Texas judicial system and the way the Supreme Court works.

“Hearing the justices speak was a wonderful experience that taught me a lot about the judiciary branch and how that level of the court system works,” junior Emma Johnsen said.  “It was eye-opening, and I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to go.”
