Students Qualify for State-Level Congressional Debate

Senior Jakob Davenport poses after receiving his silver medal. Davenport later made it to state finals, but did not place.

Senior Jakob Davenport qualified for state-level congressional debate Thursday at Kilgore Region 7. He won second place for the 4A region conference.

“I feel pretty good about winning regionals,” Davenport said. “Congress is always really fun despite how long taks, but I feel good and think I’m going to do even better at state.”

This is the second state-qualification Davenport has won, the first being in his junior year. Senior Jaxson Buttram and Sophomore Madison Barnes also competed. Barnes placed eighth in the 4A region conference. Sophomore Hailey Maccalous was a first alternate.

“It’s alway a good day to earn a state qualification,” speech and debate coach Roy McKenzie said. “Even though Jakob has qualified before, it’s always a new year and a new tournament. Getting the qualification under his belt is a really good start and we just look forward to state.”
