The Lindale Band Family has made a Go Fund Me for sophomore Gabe Hernandez after a car accident that left him hospitalized. The Go Fund Me was created by Tim and Amy Walker, the presidents of the Band Booster Club.
“It is just awesome that we had some band parents who cared so much, and I think it is just wonderful,” head band director Weston Fisher said. “It shows to Gabe’s family that we do consider them a part of the Lindale band family, and that we are helping them through this the best we can, and that they’re not alone.”
The Go Fund Me began on Jan 6, and currently has a goal of $10,000 to give to the Hernandez family to aid in paying hospital fees. As of this writing, the Go Fund Me has amassed $7,856 and is 79% of the way to its goal.
“It’s horrible that this has happened to Gabe and his family,” Walker said. “We are so thankful that so many people have stepped in to help support Gabe and family during this difficult time.”
Hernandez got into the accident after a car ran a stop sign and crashed into the passenger side of the car where he was sitting. The accident occurred on Dec 30, and he has been in the hospital since.
“I am heartbroken for Gabe and for his family,” Fisher said. “You don’t wish for something like this to happen to anyone, and my prayers are out to Gabe to make a full recovery.”
Hernandez was in a coma at the beginning of his treatment, but has since been awake. His main injuries were a skull fracture, inability to move parts of his body on the left side, a collapsed lung, and broken bones over the sinus cavity on the left side of his nose and check.
“ I can’t imagine what Gabe is going through right now, fighting for his life and fighting to make progress, and what his parents are going through watching him endure this,” Fisher said. “I am just so heartbroken, and wish that no matter what he will just continue to go forward.”
Currently, Hernandez’s surgery to fix the fractures has been postponed so that his body
can heal more. He is currently able to talk, undergoing short physical therapy sessions, occupational therapy, and speech therapy daily. He can also move most of his right body.
“Gabe is going to have a long recovery and his family needs our support and prayers,” Walker said.
To gain more support for the Go Fund Me, the National Honors Society is offering volunteer hours in place for donating money. For every 5$ donated to the Go Fund Me, members can earn 1 service hour that goes towards their required 20 hours of service.
“This is a great opportunity for students to give back to their fellow student and peer,” Clemens said. “As well as to hopefully help the family of Gabe as they’re on this journey for his recovery.”
Hernandez plays the clarinet in the wind and ensemble band, directed by Fisher. He was an all region clarinet player and earned a spot on the all region band.
“Our prayers go out to Gabe, that he makes a full recovery so we can see him back at the Lindale High School where he belongs,” Fisher said. “We hope that he can pick up right where he left off and keep moving forward, and we wish the best for him.”
