Members of the Eagle Eye newspaper staff and EagleVision broadcast staff won multiple individual awards for their online newspaper stories and videos from the Texas Association of Journalism Educators (TAJE) the Interscholastic League Press Conference (ILPC) contest.
“I’m really excited about my newspaper and broadcast students winning ILPC awards this year,” newspaper and broadcast teacher Neda Morrow said. “I’m just super proud of them for all the work they have done.”
TAJE is a professional journalism organization for journalism educators. They also host various contests that focus on the quality of concept, writing, and design to give online and print news programs an opportunity to gain individual recognition. The ratings consist of superior, excellent and honorable mentions. Students send in submissions from all over the state.
“The individual awards are difficult as students are entered from all over the state,” Morrow said. “To win in the top part of this really shows the quality of work they can do.”
Students compete in ILPC against each other at the state level in multiple categories, including writing, photography, multimedia packages, videography, and podcasting
“The staff has worked relentlessly this year and has brought light to so many stories,” senior Jaida Jones said. “This staff has done some really good work.”
EagleVision also creates documentaries and short films throughout the year that they submit to ILPC. They can receive first, second, third place ratings including honorable mentions.
“Every year, our staff works extremely hard to produce quality films for the community,” junior Sydney Hines said. “One plus of making films is submitting them to contests like ILPC. We are all so excited to see our hard work pay off and celebrate big wins like this one together.”
Leading up to the competitions, the newspaper staff works by writing news articles, feature and entertainment stories, shooting videos, and producing one print magazine per semester. The judges read through their work and multimedia techniques to determine the rating.
“I am really thankful we get to work in such a staff-based class, ” junior Keren Lee said. “I always have a lot of fun, and it is helpful for the real world.”
