The theater department has begun preparations for the UIL One Act Play The Light in the Darkest by Michael K. Ward. They will compete at District March 6, where the top three schools will advance to Bi-district.
“I’m excited because we will be doing a play written by a friend of mine about a period in history that I am very passionate about,” theater director Kari McKenzie said. “It focuses on women’s rights.”
The cast holds rehearsals every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday to prepare for the contest. The show holds 20 cast and crew members with three technicians and 17 actors.
“I am so excited to begin rehearsals because the sooner we start the show the more prepared we’ll be,” senior Ashlynn Blankenship said. “I really like this show because of all the women empowerment present.”
The play features the true story of the Matchgirl strike of 1888 and the poor working conditions seen in America at the time. They have not yet planned a public performance.
“I’m excited to grow with everyone and creating new long lasting memories,” junior Lily Ledsome said. “I’m excited on improving my acting and being the best I can be with my part.”
