Debater Advances to State in Congress

The debate team competed recently in the congressional regional competition in Center, TX.  Junior Jakob Davenport won a first place medal and will advance to the  state meet in Austin.

“This year’s team seems promising,” Davenport said. “I feel that when the real competitions kick off we will be more than prepared to show up and really show off why the Lindale speech and debate is as successful as we’re known to be.”

Junior Jaxson Buttram, Davenport, and Aden Ramsey all made it through the preliminary rounds. Ramsey was awarded top presiding officer of 4A congress.

“This truly is a great organization and one with lots of opportunities,” Buttram said. “I love competing with this team and making new friends and memories every year.”

This year, the team has already competed in multiple meets including  Princeton, Buffalo, and All Saints. Lindale has also hosted two on Sept. 17 and Oct. 19.

“I hope in the future our team stays as diverse as we have been,” Davenport said. “We have always had a team that can win in multiple events, and that helps us grow and succeed in all meets.”

The team will compete again on Friday at Athens. Multiple freshmen will attend to gain experience and watch the upperclassmen compete.

“We’re pretty heavy with freshmen and sophomores this year as opposed to juniors and seniors,” Davenport said. “So I hope they’re taught as many events as possible so there are plenty of choices as to what they want to represent Lindale in.”
