Senior Commits To Sam Houston

Senior Will Hutchens has committed to play football at Sam Houston State University. Hutchens will officially sign later this school year.

“Will is such a team guy and a really good leader,” boys athletic director Chris Cochran said. “Anytime we have a chance to see a guy go on to play at the next level it’s a really awesome thing.”

Hutchens is a multi-sport athlete participating in basketball and football and was selected as 2nd team all district offensive lineman after the 22′ season.  In the prior season, Hutchens was injured and missed the Eagle’s playoffs.

“Recovery from my injury last season was long and a lot of work,” Will Hutchens said. “I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to play college football at the Division 1 level because it is an awesome accomplishment. Ultimately God blessed me with the opportunity and I’m very thankful.”

Sam Houston’s coach K. C. Keeler led the Bearkats to their FCS national championship in 2020. The Bearkats moved from the Southland Conference to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) in 2021.

“We really like the coaches and the intensity of the players,  and I feel like this is the right fit for him,” Hutchen’s mother Kindala Hutchens said. “It’s not too far from home and we really are impressed by their program.”

Sam Houston State University is a D1 institution located in Huntsville, TX. As of July 1, 2023, SHSU athletics will join the Conference USA and will play as a part of the distinguished Football Bowl Subdivision. [For more info, check out SHSU’s article on the transition HERE.]

“Sam Houston is a great place and I love it,” Will Hutchens said, “The coaching staff and the players are really welcoming. There’s a lot of love there.”
