District Releases Proposed 2020-2021 Calendar

The new proposed calendar of 2020-2021 will be voted on at the March 20 board meeting and includes a few changes from last year.

“The calendar begins each year with Mr. Surratt putting together a calendar committee made up of teachers from each campus and himself,” Principal Jeremy Chilek said. “I don’t play much a role in the process, other than nominating the teacher from our campus who will serve on the committee.”

The process begins with the committee looking at the current calendar, and finding any changes based on different requirements for next year’s school year. This year’s proposed calendar has added an extra school day as well as shifted around different vacation starting and ending dates.

“I like the calendar,” teacher Lindsay Kelly said. “I especially like starting school on a Wednesday instead of a Monday. I think a Wednesday start for the week is a nice way to ease back into the school year.”

At the beginning of this next year, school is planned to start on August the 12 while graduation will be on the 28th of May. Input on the calendar can be given to Stan Surratt, LISD superintendent.

“They discuss concerns with the calendar and come up with a draft,” Chilek said. “They then take input on the proposed calendar from the community.”

Some of the proposed dates on the calendar are Thanksgiving break from November 23-27, Christmas break from December 21 to January 1, and Spring Break from March 8-12. Other date changes are the bad weather days which are on April 5 and May 28.
