Students Donate to Wear PJs on the First Monday of Each Month

National Honor Society (NHS) students have come out with a new fundraiser this year, which takes place the first Monday of each month. The fundraiser allows students to wear pajamas for the day if they pay $2.

“The students came up with the idea to raise money for different organizations with one [fundraiser] in the spring and one in the fall,” NHS sponsor Sally Clemmons said. “The [students] thought that it would be a good idea to have pajama Mondays to make a change.”

The money from the fall semester will go to Nicholas’s Pet Haven in Tyler, and the proceeds from the spring semester will go to Hope Haven, here in Lindale. The first pajama Monday in September raised $60 with just one day of advertisement.

“Nicholas pet haven is a no-kill animal shelter in Tyler,” senior Julia Austin said. “They make an effort to combat animal cruelty, shelter animals, and [have] quite a few adoption days to benefit the community.”

Once the idea for the fundraiser came into being, the organization had to get approval. Senior Brina Kuslak proposed the idea to the administration to make sure that such a thing would be allowed on campus.

“It was kind of a wild goose chase to get permission for the fundraiser, ”Kuslak said. “[I talked to Principal Payne] about it and she listened and eventually agreed that it was a good idea.”

Pajama has opened up opportunities for students as well. It allows students to express themselves in a way that they couldn’t otherwise in a quite comfy fashion.

“Pajama day allows the kids who are insanely tired from the night before studying, practicing, or binging netflix,” sophomore Rebekah Beard said. “[Students] get to come to school the next morning not worrying about what to wear.”

The pajama Monday fundraiser is the first type of fundraiser that NHS has ever done. Rather than raising for club funds, the fundraiser is intended to give back to the community.

“I am sure that we are wanting to do more fundraisers,” Clemmons said. “The students are very creative and come up with great ideas, so I’m sure we will have more like this in the future.”
